Department of Construction Engineering

About Us

Adjacent to Fujian, China, Kinmen is a beautiful island with total area of 150 km2 and is the gateway to Mainland China. As China’s economy flourishes, Kinmen plays a very important role in Cross-Strait relations due to its unique and pivotal geological location. The creation of National Kinmen Institute of Technology (KMIT) in Kinmen has broadly facilitated the economical and academic interaction between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. This opportunity provides abundant fertile soil for Department of Construction Engineering, to grow and develop excellence. The Department of Construction Engineering, formerly the Department of Construction Management of National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, was founded in 1997. In 2003, KMIT reorganized the department as a four (4) year college. In the past ten (10) years, the department has been evolved from a junior college program into a small but prestigious institute with confidence and pride.

Educational Objectives

The main objective of the department is to develop high level construction engineers having both knowledge of engineering technology and management skills. In addition, training on information technology and ecological conservation is emphasized in the curriculum. The students have developed personal traits of independent study and team work that will enable them to perform as a sustainable engineer.

Curriculum

The Department's teaching and research activities can be categorized into two major areas, namely, (1) Construction technology, such as mathematics, mechanics, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, materials and construction, surveying and computer applications, and construction management, and (2) Ecological engineering and Sustainable Development, such as landscape ecology, road ecology, green building, ecological engineering, and disaster prevention. The curriculum consists of not only the traditional construction engineering training, but state of the art environmental and ecological courses.

Areas of Specialties

With blending the courses of construction technology, sustainable development and conservation ecology in the curriculum, a graduated student of this department will be a valuable asset in the job market. In developing civil engineers with sustainability concepts, the focal areas of teaching and research of Department of Construction Engineering are in (1) Sustainable Planning, (2) Ecological Engineering, (3) Construction Management, and (4) Disaster Prevention Technology. The technical courses consist of six areas of study: Mechanics and Structures, Soil and Foundation, Materials and Construction, Construction Management, Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Engineering, and Ecological Engineering. The hard work and teamwork ethic of the students is demonstrated by performing exceptionally well in national research competitions and having won 1st and 2nd place in 2005 and 2006, respectively. High school students who are interested in engineering technology and sustainable planning are welcome to join this warm and energetic family.

Prospective

1. Enhancing cross-strait academic interchange

Academic collaboration agreements have been established between the KMIT’s Department of Construction Engineering and Fuzhou University and Xiamen University, respectively. Several visits and a short term research project have laid the foundation for the exchange of faculty members and students in the coming year. To understand and explore the landscapes of construction industry in China, selected students of the department will be sent to work in Fuzhou City in China in the summer of 2007. This is the stepping stone of entering the huge Chinese construction market for our students.

2.    Developing Advanced Construction Technologies

The department is focusing on the subjects of Island Study and Ecological Engineering with desire of becoming pioneer in Sustainable Construction Engineering in the coming years. To achieve this, the short term objective is to establish a graduate program in the fields of Disaster Prevention and Sustainability. The long term course is set to institute Inter-disciplinary Center for Island Study. The students are trained to believe that sustainability is a responsible science for all fields of engineering.
